to the Chinese Government as would result in the latter handing over

to us in China the assets of the old firm, to which as owners of the

goodwill we are entitled, we would of course have no difficulty in im-

mediately meeting the old firm's pre-war liabilities in Hongkong.

I am cabling to my brother in order to ascertain the exact

terms of any undertaking which may already have been given to the of-

ficer administering the Government of Hongkong, and I shall take the

liberty of communicating with you again on receipt of his reply. I

may add that, on the strength of your letter of the 8th of March 1919,

indicating that the Officer administering the Government of Hongkong

had been instructed by telegraph not to place any obstacle in the way

of the use by Messrs. Arnhold Brothers & Co. Ltd. of the trade marks

registered in the name of Arnhold, Karberg & Co., we have already made

a certain number of shipments under these trade marks, as we oould of

course not anticipate that, after we had complied with the conditions

originally stipulated, we should after the lapse of four months be

notified that further conditions were to be imposed.
